Greg Weich – Training Summary

Coach Greg Weich has built a successful program by stressing consistency in training and building a culture. He has done this  by getting the kids to run more as a group all year. He is also a big believer in the coach setting the tone by showing up every day and being excited about running. Unlike many of the other successful programs, Coach Weich’s athletes do not run 7 days a week, but they consistently run year round for 48 weeks a year. Greg thinks the biggest difference in his program, since he took over, has been building the running culture in the school.

Building a successful distance runner is not a short term project. Coach Weich learned from Adam’s State coach Joe Vigil early on that you need to take a long term approach to building a successful distance runner.

Eric Heintz – Featured Coach for June of Season 1

Eric Heintz – Featured Coach for June of Season 1

Eric Heintz rounds out the twelve coaches for Season 1, inaugural season of High School Running Coach.

Coach Heintz coaches at Marist High School in Atlanta, GA, a private catholic school with approximately 760 students.  Roughly 160 of those students participate in cross country, meaning roughly one in five students in school is part of the cross country team.

Coach Heintz’s girls have won 7 straight state titles in cross country (16 titles total).  His boys have won 10 titles in total, with 7 runner-ups.

We have much to learn from coach Heintz and we thank him for his time.

James DeMarco – Featured coach for April of Season 1

James DeMarco – Featured coach for April of Season 1

Coach James DeMarco is our featured coach for April in Season 1.

James DeMarco coaches at Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg, VA, a high school that has 1100 students and has won 21 state championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field in the time DeMarco has been there (20 as head coach). He started coaching the girls cross country team in 2005 and they have won six state championships of the nine years and the other three years were second. They have qualified for the Nike

Cross Nationals in 2009 and 2013 as a team and had an individual qualify in 2008. They were the smallest public school to qualify in 2009 (6th) and 2013 (21st) on the girls side. DeMarco took over the boys program in 2006 that had not qualified for the state meet the previous three years (even regionals one of those years). The team made it that first year to the state meet and finished sixth. The next few years they finished fifth, second, and then won the next four years in a row. In 2013 they finish 4th. In 2012 the boys qualified for the Nike Cross Country Nationals (10th).Most recently Coach DeMarco’s team won the 2014 Hoka One One Postal Nationals.

Mick Grant – Featured Coach for March of Season 1

Mick Grant is our featured coach for the month of March in Season 1.

Mick is the co-author best seller “The Youth and Teen Running Encyclopedia” with John Molvar.

Coach Grant is now retired from the Lynx Elite Athletics club, a club with alumni such as Russell Brown, Chantelle Dron, Harry Norton, Keely Maguire. His program has produced Footlocker qualifiers, National Scholastic Indoor Champions, a Golden West Invitational mile champion, a Youth World Championships qualifier, a Junior Pan Am Games qualifier, several USATF Junior Olympics Champions.

His guiding principles in his coaching are as follows.

Rule 1, Have Fun

Rule 2, Stay Healthy

Be Consistent

Build Base, Learn Pace, Execute Race

Train to run negative splits in practice, workouts & races

Increase mileage, train for long term development

No improvement without recovery
